pfSense is an open source firewall/router computer software distribution based on FreeBSD. It is installed on a physical computer or a virtual machine to make a dedicated firewall/router for a network. It can be configured and upgraded through a web-based interface, and requires no knowledge of the underlying FreeBSD system to manage.

pfSense has been installed in our lab using an old x64 PC with 4 PCI network adapters. The primary target of the diploma thesis was  to provide a full documentation for  users containing instructions for the installation and the customization of pfsense as a firewall/router solution on a physical machine as well as to study its use in a real lab enviorment with a public IP.
